WordsUncaged, Unlock Tomorrow, SISTER INMATE, and Cal State Los Angeles have collaborated and curated a month-long exhibit of photography, art, storytelling that imagines how incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women are not a problem to be solved by society, but, rather, a population who are uniquely positioned to help solve many problems in our communities.
The exhibit features artists such as Estevan Oriol, MEAR ONE, Spanto, Valerie J. Bower, F. Scott SChafer and Danny Dwyer. There will be a stunning installation from Chris Branscombe and Kenneth Webb, dissecting the traumas of our society and showing us how to heal. Both artists are currently incarcerated in state prison. Along with youth from juvenile hall and a full roster of other talented artists, this exhibit will show the damages of mass incarceration through the eyes of one of our most important assets; artists.
SISTER INMATE is proud to present Graduate From Prison: A portrait + interview series featuring incredible stories of transformation by formerly incarcerated men and women. Our goal is to educate society on the journey these humans take to no longer be considered a risk to socirty, and how they instead use thier experiences to fulfill greater legacies, becoming the heroes they were born to be. We hope this series will help the world understand the importance of supporting education, life skills, mental health, and trauma treatment programs inside jails and prisons. When one is given the support needed to change and commit to a new life, transformation is possible. We are excited for you to meet these individuals who inspire us so much, and hope that the inspire you as well, so much so, that you too, will want to "graduate from prison".
Tonight is our closing reception and your last chance to witness a great exhibit, made possible only be the coming together of so many amazing organizations and individuals! Help stop mass incarceration now!
